Who is a Church Leader?

  • Have you ever been ordained as an elder or deacon—
whether or not you are currently serving the church in that way?
  • Have you been a trustee? Or a Sunday School teacher?
  • Are you involved in a committee at your church?
  • Do people at church seek you out for advice or counsel?

It is who you are in the church, not the office you hold!

WORKSHOPS 9:45 am - 11:45 am

Church Leaders as Spiritual Leaders
For all church leaders

To be a spiritual leader is not a matter of ordination or office, but of living out of the reality
that God is present, powerful, and active among us. How can Christians use power and
responsibility to help the church be Christ in the world? While basic information on being an
elder and deacon is briefly covered in this workshop, the majority of our time will be spent
on leadership borne of Christian discipleship, and how principles of good management
and organization are necessary as we seek to be both faithful and effective in the church
and in the world.

Leader: Steve Shussett, Teaching Presbyter of Lehigh Presbytery.

Treasurer Education Workshop
For elders, trustees, treasurers, and church employees responsible for
any aspect of the church's financial affairs.

Topics to be covered from the PC(USA)'s "Church Treasurer's Manual" include Functions of
a Church Treasurer, Internal Controls and Record Keeping, Audit or Financial Review, Insurance
and Bonding, and Stewardship and Budgeting
. Single copies of the manual will be
provided to each attendee
. During the presentation and discussion of each topic,
workshop participants will be encouraged to ask questions and share their own
experiences in response to others' questions.

Leader: Dave Boltz belongs to the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem and
is the Presbytery’s Treasurer.

Commissioner? What Have I Gotten Myself Into?

This workshop will give you an overview of what’s expected of Commissioners to Presbytery.
We’ll learn a little more about what goes on in a Presbytery meeting, what Commissioner’s responsibilities and perks are, and how you as a commissioner can help your own church to
know more about what is going on in the larger church.  Most of us just assume that our Pastor,
who usually goes to the Presbytery meeting, will make sure all the important information comes
back to our Session and church….but that’s not always what happens.  You’ll learn about the
things that will help you close the information gap.

Leader:  The Rev. Matilda Chase, Pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church of Mt. Bethel
and the 2010 Moderator of Lehigh Presbytery.

Deacon Duo:
Caring to Listen & Companioning Those Dealing with Grief

This workshop has two mini sessions combined! In the first half, you will learn what it
means to listen and how it is such a powerful tool when caring for those individuals in
your congregation. The second half, you will learn how you can companion with those who
are dealing with loss in their life
.

Leader:  Cathy Burnet, Deacon from First Presbyterian Church of Easton.

Discernment – Listening to God
and One Another

Learning the art of discernment is one important part of spiritual leadership.
Hearing about discernment may only be as helpful as being told how to ride a bicycle.
Discernment, like riding a bicycle, is a skill one learns through practice and experience.

In this workshop you will practice discernment using issues and concerns that regularly
come up in your congregation. Come prepared to pray, listen and talk.

Leader:  The Rev. Roberta Kearney, 11 year member Lehigh Presbytery;
Interim Pastor, Faith Church, Emmaus.

Ways to Reach All Learners

Children come to Church School with different learning styles. This workshop will
demonstrate easy ways to determine your children’s learning strengths as well as a
variety of activities for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners in your Church School
program. The workshop is designed mainly for teachers of  Kindergarten to 6th Grade
Church School Classes.

Leader: Martha Cox- Second Grade Teacher; Elder First Presbyterian Church, Lehighton

Why Is Christian Education Still Important?

A variety of segments of Christian Education will be discussed, including Small Groups,
Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Weekly Meetings.
There will also be samples available that people can take home with them
.

Leader:  Joe Hackman from Hackman’s Bible Book Store in Whitehall.

WORKSHOP-DISCUSSION 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Behavioral Covenants
Behavioral Covenants are a tool to help congregations
(or committees or families or any other group) intentionally set the terms for their lives together.

We live in increasingly “rude” times.  In just the last year we saw a sports figure cuss
out a judge, a performer interrupt an awards ceremony because he thought the award
should go to someone else, and a member of congress angrily interrupt the president of
the United States in the middle of his speech. We have all watched the increase of road
rage on our highways.  We’ve shaken our heads at the violent solutions people seem to
be coming up with to solve really minor differences of opinion.  Unfortunately, this rude
behavior has invaded our churches as well.  The gathering of brothers and sisters
that were once noted for “how they love one another” has become less a place of
sharing joys and concerns as we work together to build God’s kingdom on earth and
more of a place where people expect things to go their way or no way at all.  When
problems arise, we’ve become more likely to accuse and point fingers than we are to
sit and consider how to work together.

Developed over a weekend or in a series of meetings, Behavioral Covenants
are a way for the followers of Jesus to say “no” to the rudeness of the world and “yes”
to the invitation to model Christ’s way of love and forgiveness.

Leader: Members of the Lehigh Presbytery’s Barnabas Team.
